only 67% literacy

literacy is critical to development

Literacy skills are an entry point to developing more advanced, stable, and better compensated skills for work.

literacy is gendered

Women comprise approximately 2/3 of all illiterate adults world wide.

tech for literacy

Our digital solution teaches literacy using a phone. Training will be delivered by Cell-Ed's unique technology — a voice- and text-based app that offers 3–5 minutemicro-modules via SMS, app, or Whatsapp. Content will introduce learners to basic English Language and cover topics like COVID-19, civic engagement, financial empowerment, African history, and ethics. Each module will consist of audio,

text, and then a request for the learner to send back an SMS to test understanding. Our pilot project begins in Sierra Leone in partnership with the Freetown City Council's working group for skill development. In Sierra Leone, all existing adult literacy programs are conducted face to face. There is an opportunity to leverage mobile technology to scale literacy projects in Sierra Leone and beyond.
